Suffolk school sailors triumph at UK Women's National Championship

Royal Hospital School (RHS) in Holbrook, is celebrating the exceptional achievement of its sailing team at the UK Women's National Championship for team racing.

Led by its dedicated coaches and displaying remarkable skill and teamwork, the Royal Hospital School contingent showcased their prowess among 14 teams from across the country, including esteemed institutions and clubs, held on held on the 16 and 17 March.

Over the course of the competition, Royal Hospital School entered two teams, each comprising six talented sailors.

Employing strategic manoeuvres and impeccable teamwork, the teams navigated through intense races, vying against formidable opponents from universities and sailing clubs.

On the first day of the championship, the RHS Grey team demonstrated exceptional performance, winning nine out of 10 races and securing the top position in the rankings. Meanwhile, the RHS Blue team displayed commendable skill, winning 7 races and securing the fifth position.

Advancing to the gold league on the second day, both Royal Hospital School teams continued to exhibit outstanding sailing prowess.

The Blue team, in particular, shone brightly, winning five out of six races and securing the second position in the league standings.

In the semi-finals, the RHS Blue team showcased their resilience and determination, securing victory against Cambridge University with a 2 - 0 win. This remarkable feat propelled them to the finals, where they faced off against Girls Afloat, the top team in the competition.

In an exhilarating final showdown, the RHS Blue team displayed remarkable teamwork and determination, winning a nail-biting deciding race to emerge victorious.

Their victory not only secured the UK Women's National Championship title but also showcased their remarkable skill and character in the face of tough competition.

Year 13 Pupil Georgie, RHS' Blue team Captain added: "It was a really smoothly run, well organised event that had a bubbly friendly atmosphere with great team racing taking place throughout the whole weekend. The organisers made the racing fair and enjoyable, we all had a great time."
