Trimley parish councillors have backed new plans to build five houses in front of the village's 210ft high water tower.

Developers Alston Homes have resubmitted the application after previously failing to provide detailed information in time forcing the m to withdraw the application.

However, the applicants have satisfied planners and Anglian Water and have confirmed the new application avoids a need to move a water mains.

Local firm Alston Homes want to build five three-bedroom homes, all for the open market, with 11 car parking spaces.

East Suffolk District Council will determine whether the development will be allowed, although the decision could be made by delegated power to planning officers and not heard by a committee.

Trimley St Mary parish council has responded as consultees last month saying it did not object to the plans.

The famous 86-year-old landmark which can been seen from Shotley and Harwich, has reservoirs nearby that contain 2.35 million gallons of water which can be pumped now to areas including Felixstowe, the Trimley St Martin and Trimley St Mary, along with other villages.

Land around the water tower has been used for a number of homes in recent years, while the tower itself, which was drained in 2002, is now used for mobile phone masts.

In its heyday the water tower held 150,000 gallons of water – enough for a two-hour peak demand in Felixstowe.

To view the application go to East Suffolk Council website and use reference number: DC/20/1034/FUL
