Ipswich hospital has confirmed that 19 people have died in two days at Ipswich hospital due to the coronavirus.

This week has been the worst for Suffolk since the hospital, used by many Felixstowe patients, admitted 13 people had died over a three week period, but had not been reported due to an administrative error.

After another 13 deaths were confirmed yesterday Nick Hulme, Chief Executive for East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust, today admitted a further six had died.

He said: "We can confirm that six patients, three in their 90s, two in their 80s, and one in their 60s, all of whom had underlying health conditions, have sadly passed away at Ipswich Hospital.

One patient in their 80s who had underlying health conditions, has sadly passed away at Colchester Hospital. They had all tested positive for COVID-19.

"Our thoughts and condolences remain with the patients' families and loved ones at this difficult time."

Three more people had died on Wednesday and another two on both Monday and Tuesday.

People on theFelixstowe peninsula mainly go to Ipswich Hospital when they are ill, although some go to Colchester where it has been reported 36 people have died since Monday, or West Suffolk in Bury St Edmunds.

UK's hospital death toll reached 9, 875 on Saturday with the virus claiming a further 917 lives – a day after the Department of Health announced the highest daily death toll for hospitalised coronavirus patients in Europe.
