Footballer cleared of assault after opponent lost a tooth in Sunday League match at Felixstowe

A Sunday League footballer has today been cleared of assault after an opponent's tooth was knocked out during a match at Felixstowe.
Joshua Cook, of Goldsmith Road, Ipswich, who then played for The Feathers, was found not guilty of assault occasioning actual bodily harm against Neil Potter, who played for Gresham FC, in a game between the Ipswich Sunday Football League sides on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at Langley Avenue Sports Field in Felixstowe, saw Greshams FC player Neil Potter lose a tooth.
The jury were told by prosecutor Nicola May that the alleged assault was a deliberate "smash to the face" with a swinging elbow when the ball had moved on.
Mr Cook, 30, denied making deliberate or unlawful contact with Mr Potter, and a jury of 10 men and two women took one hour and 23 minutes to return its verdict of not guilty, at Ipswich Crown Court today (Friday).
The court heard Mr Cook, who now plays for Portman Rovers scored for his team, after going on a s alate substitute and the alleged assault took place in the 89th minute, when Mr Cook was initially shown a yellow card before being sent off by the referee.
