Felixstowe Nub News delves into the account of the Felixstowe shark attack of 2016.

With the recent shark attack on a snorkeler in Cornwall making headlines, we look back to a similar incident in 2016 off the coast of Felixstowe.

It was December 10 2016 and Christopher Mills, a recruitment consultant from Ipswich, was taking the opportunity to windsurf in the North Sea, close to Felixstowe Pier.

It was all going as expected until he was thrown off balance and into the water by a mysterious entity. However, upon re-surfacing, the 36 year old saw a shark swim away before disappearing beneath the waves

In a panic, he managed to scramble to the Felixstowe shores when he realised how close his encounter was. He noticed a large chunk had been bitten from his board.

Mills said of the incident, "It was terrifying. I had heard of sharks off Cornwall, but had not realised they had now moved around the coast to the North Sea."

"I assume the shark was not after me because it swam off. Perhaps it thought the board was a seal or something."

At the time, Bartholomew Quint of the UK Shark Society said: "Our team is examining Mr. Mill's board in order to match the bite marks to a particular species.

"To be on the safe side, we would suggest open-water swimmers, fisherman and surfers should be extra vigilant while in the North Sea around Suffolk."

Quint confirmed that the diameter of the bite mark indicated that whatever it was that chewed on Mr. Mill's surf board was around eight-foot long.

The sentiment shared by both Mills and the female snorkeler in Cornwall is their belief that the shark was not aiming to harm human life, with the female snorkeler not wanting to "tarnish the reputation of an already persecuted species."
