Fascinating Suffolk Facts:

Smuggling was huge business in the county during the 18th century and not just on the coast. While the nocturnal activities were huge along both banks along the river Orwell, with tunnels known to be in place at the Ship Inn, Levington, the Butt & Oyster at Pin Mill, and the bay at Woolverstone, one of the biggest gangs were based in Hadleigh, with John Harvey leading nearly 100 men, with 20 of them involved battle with the authorities at the George Inn in 1735.
