On this day in 1968, the housing charity, Shelter, said up to three million people in Britain were living in damp, overcrowded slum conditions. According to figures released by the Health Foundation back in December last year, one in three households (32% or 7.6 million) in England had at least one major housing problem relating to overcrowding, affordability or poor-quality housing.
