A rare red weather warning has been issued for Felixstowe from 10am this morning as Storm Eunice hits the resort.

The Met office has warned people to stay indoors until around 1pm today due to the winds expected to reach more than 90mph.

It is first time since the system started more than 50 years ago that highest alert, has been issued in the Felixstowe area.

It is only issued when there is a danger to life, with the conditions: "causing significant disruption and dangerous conditions due to extremely strong winds", the Met Office said.

The Orwell Bridge is closed after highways closed it at 4am this morning with diversions through Ipswich town centre, and may not reopen until Sunday, depending on the severity and timing of the storm.

The move comes days after a six metre wave (nearly 20ft) was measured off the Felixstowe coast at Harwich approach.

The wave, as high as a two storey house, was almost double of those seen during Storm Dudley and served as warning of what could hit.

Services in Felixstowe are likely to be affected with bin collections disrupted and residents are being asked to be patient.

Felixstowe pier will not open, and the Boardwalk Cafe Bar will remain closed until 12noon today, weather dependent.

Travel to and from the town will be disrupted, with trains cancelled and rescheduled at Felixstowe to Ipswich, and onto the the main Norwich to Liverpool St route, including Manningtree station.

Power cuts are probable and UK Power Network can be contacted on 0800 316 3105.
