After the country was enthralled by the Tokyo Olympics, Felixstowe can re-live the excitement with two sporting events in one October weekend.

Felixstowe will be hosting the final stage of the Women's Tour 2021 and the Felixstowe Triathlon.

With Team GB winning 12 medals (six gold) in cycling events and one gold and two silver medals in Triathlon events at the games, plus the anticipated results of the Paralympic games, these events would appear perfect for Felixstowe spectators who want to relish in the post-Olympic buzz.

Saturday 9 October will see Felixstowe become the finishing point for the Women's Tour 2021 in a race where every second counts.

The Grand Départ will be hosted in Oxfordshire on Monday 4 October before the tour makes it's way down for three days of racing in the east of England, culminating in a 155km, final stage race from Haverhill to Felixstowe.

This is the second time Felixstowe has been a host venue for the Tour and the first time since 2014 that Suffolk has hosted the final stage of the race as the Women's Tour 2020 was postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Much like the usual spike of participation in sports after the Olympics, this event will be expected to follow suit. Cllr Letitia Smith, East Suffolk Council's cabinet member for the communities, leisure and tourism, said: "We are committed to increasing people's participation in sport and the Women's Tour will no doubt inspire more people to take up cycling and improve their health and wellbeing."

Twelve of the world's top fifteen teams will be cycling their way to Felixstowe, including SD Worx: the world's number one team. Three British teams will also be competing this year (AWOL O'Shea, CAMS-Basso Bikes, Drops-Le Col s/b TEMPUR).

As an exciting first for Felixstowe, a pool and open water based triathlon will commence the day after the Women's Tour on Sunday 10 October.

The Felixstowe Triathlon, beginning at 8:30am, will bring up to 200 entrants to compete in the Super Sprint, Sprint and Standard distance triathlons.

Each division will take part in the three-part trial. They will commence either a 12 length stretch in the pool of Felixstowe Leisure Centre in the super sprint division or a swim in the sea, allowing for weather and tide conditions.

Following this, a demanding but scenic cycle route through Trimley St. Martin. Those in the standard division completing a 39.7km route which passes through the same route but crosses over the A14 into a loop through Kirton, Newbourne and Brightwell.

Finally, competitors will run in a simple loop course up and down the promenade before moving across to Sea Road and joining the same finish straight as the Women's Tour.

Cllr Seamus Bennett, the town's representative for sport and recreation said that the council was "proud to support the launch of the inaugural Felixstowe triathlon" and described it as a "key part of [a] big weekend marking finale of the Women's Tour."

More than 50% of available entries in the event have been taken up already, an indicator of how popular this event will be.

The triathlon will be making use of the finishing gantry left by the Women's Tour, which promises a spectacular finish for the trial and for the sporting weekend.
