Where to go and what to do on Suffolk's Heritage Days in Felixstowe
Each September thousands of volunteers across the country invite you to experience local history, architecture and culture. All for free.
This year Heritage Open days returns between 10-19 September and here are a couple in Felixstowe for you too enjoy.
Submarine Mining Establishment at Felixstowe Museum
Saturday 11 September 11:00 - 16:00
A tour around the remaining features of the Submarine Mining Establishment (1878) - the last remaining purpose-built SME in the UK.
There will be a guided tour of the Ravelin Block, where the Felixstowe Museum now stands. Beginning outside, the tour will go through the narrow trolleyway through the building where the mines were prepared and tested. This includes a look into the Smith's Shop which is not normally open to museum visitors.
The tour will then trace the track through to the remains of the riverside mining jetty where the mines were loaded onto the steam launch 'Nellie' to be laid across the river mouth.
Dogs on a short lead are welcome. Maximum 10 people per tour/session. No booking required.

The Felixstowe Sea Cadets Drill Hall
Sunday 12 September 12:00 - 15:00
A tour around the Drill Hall, Garrison Lane - now home to the Felixstowe Sea Cadet Corps.
This tour will provide the opportunity to explore the buildings and find out what the Felixstowe Sea Cadets do.
Activities for children will be available and refreshments will be available for a small donation.
There will be no public parking onsite but visitors can park at the local train station for free and will be a five to 10 minute walk away.
Max.imim people per tour/session - 20 minutes
