Carnival goers are being warned that travel to Felixstowe will be disrupted due to a planned train strike this weekend.

ASLEF union staff will walk out this Saturday as part of a strike over pay and conditions, meaning the Felixstowe to Ipswich branch line will not be operating, and there will not be a bus replacement service either.

Although the staff are back on Sunday, services may also be disrupted, although it is hoped people will be able to get to the Carnival for the afternoon and evening events.

Jamie Burles, Greater Anglia managing director, said: "We are genuinely very sorry for all the inconvenience these strikes will cause our customers, especially on Saturday, July 23 when it's followed by major engineering works the next day, when we anticipate more people might be travelling because they're unable to make their journeys on Saturday.

"Negotiations to try to resolve the pay issue causing the strikes are continuing at an industry level and we hope we can resolve this situation soon."

Greater Anglia confirmed a limited intercity service will run with the following trains:

  • Norwich-London Liverpool Street Intercity service, one train an hour, with first and last trains from Norwich at 8am and 7pm, and from Liverpool Street at 10.30am and 9.30pm.
  • Colchester-London Liverpool Street, one train an hour, with first and last trains from Colchester at 8.13am and 8.13pm, and from Liverpool Street at 10am and 10pm.

Meanwhile, carnival organisers are hoping many will not be deterred and still get to Felixstowe where there is a packed programme of events.

Things kick off on Friday night with the Swing Machine playing the music of Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Ted Heath, Woody Herman, Duke Ellington and Stan Kenton, climaxing with a 'Last Night of the Proms' theme.

On Saturday the main stage will host a vast array of talent including Ruby Ambrose, Kuk Sol Won and Serena Grant before breaking for the big procession, when Katie Mitton will resume the show.

The Felix Stowaways get proceedings back underway on Sunday, with Bounce Felixstowe. and All Glammed Up among the acts.

Dinosaurs, Fun & Faith, Steff and Nonsense Bubbles, Kinetic Science, trampolines and Punch & Judy will be in the family area on Saturday and Sunday.

Weather permitting, the fireworks display will take place at 10pm on Sunday 24 July.
