The dystopian English novelist of 'Animal Farm' and '1984' was known for his lucid prose, social criticism, opposition to totalitarianism, and support of democratic socialism. He took his pen name from the River Orwell after holidaying on the peninsula. The Red Lion is name checked in Animal Farm. (although the inspiration is thought to have come from a different pub).
