Sunday's Felixstowe breakfast briefing

By Derek Davis

Did you know?

A golfer annoyed at the sun going down too early was a main cause of the clocks now going back an hour.

William Willett, the great-great-grandfather of Coldplay's Chis Martin published leaflet in 1907 called The Waste of Daylight, encouraging people to get out of bed earlier. That led to the introduction of moving the clocks back an hour in the UK. Hopefully you enjoyed an extra in bed this morning as the we moved back into GMT, by going back an hour at 01.00.

Pause for thought...

Eternal Friend, grant me an ease

to breathe deeply of this moment, this light,

this miracle of now.

Beneath the din and fury of great movements

and harsh news and urgent crises,

make me attentive still to good news,

to small occasions and the grace of what is possible

for me to be, to do, to give, to receive,

that I may miss neither my neighbour's gift

nor my enemy's need.

Precious Lord, grant me a sense of humour

that adds perspective to compassion,

gratitude, that adds persistence to courage,

quietness of spirit, that adds irrepressibility to hope,

openness of mind, that adds surprise to joy;

that with gladness of heart I may link arm

with the One who saw signs of your kingdom

in salt and yeast, pearls and seeds,

travellers and tax collectors,

sowers and harlots, foreigners and fishermen.

-- Ted Loder

Sunday quotes:

"It seems very strange … that in the course of the world's history so obvious an improvement should never have been adopted. … The next generation of Britishers would be the better for having had this extra hour of daylight in their childhood."

— Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Joke of the day:

Most modern clocks these days auto-update when daylight savings begins/ends. So this morning I'm walking around my house thinking wow...

...times have changed.
