Sunday's Breakfast Briefing

By Derek Davis

12th Jul 2020 | Local News

On the 5th July 1948 as a culmination of a bold and pioneering plan to make healthcare no longer exclusive to those who could afford it but to make it accessible to everyone. The NHS was born.

The National Health Service was launched by the then Minister of Health in Clement Attlee's post-war government, Aneurin Bevan, at the Park Hospital in Manchester. The motivation to provide a good, strong and reliable healthcare to all was finally taking its first tentative steps.

The creation of the NHS in 1948 was the product of years of hard work and a motivation from various figures who felt the current healthcare system was insufficient and needed to be revolutionised.

Happy Birthday NHS

Sunday quotes:

"Society becomes more wholesome, more serene, and spiritually healthier, if it knows that its citizens have at the back of their consciousness the knowledge that not only themselves, but all their fellows, have access, when ill, to the best that medical skill can provide."

Aneurin Bevan

Joke of the day:

As a brain wave technologist, I often ask postoperative patients to smile to make sure their facial nerves are intact.

It always struck me as odd to be asking this question right after brain surgery, so a colleague suggested I ask patients to show me their teeth.

Armed with this new phrase, I said to my next patient, "Mr. Smith, show me your teeth."

He shook his head. "The nurse has them." —Emily Murphy

God our saviour,

look on this wounded world
