A seal tangled up in a fishing net on Felixstowe beach has been successful set free.

The grey seal came ashore on the beach near Cobbold's Point on Saturday but rescuers initially could not get near enough to cut the net.

Team members from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) and the RSPCA were called but it was a concerned member of the public that acted quickly when she spotted the seal on Sunday afternoon and was concerned it might go back into the sea.

She was able to cover it with blanket and cut the net despite the attentions of the seal's mate. Both returned to the water safely.

Jo Collins, BDMLR volunteer said: "I'm so relieved as the outcome could have been a lot different. It is always best to get the experts involved but I am so pleased we had the right result in the end."
