On this day in 1972; Two British trawlers were sunk by Icelandic gunboats during the 'cod war'. That prompted the Royal Navy to send fisheries protection ships, mainly frigates, to the north Atlantic. While no shots were fired in anger, skirmishes between the two countries' vessels was not unusual. However, no more trawlers were sunk.
