A 50-year-old who made a hoax bomb threat call to police has been warned he could have a suspended prison sentence activated after he admitted breaching the order.

Philip Harper, of Grimston Hall Cottages, Trimley St Martin, confessed to calling police saying there was a bomb in neighbouring Trimley St Mary.

Ipswich Crown Court the call was made in December last year after he was caught him smoking cannabis in the car he was living in while working on a building site, which resulted in him losing his job.

Harper had previously been handed a suspended sentence in May last year for an offence of burglary and handling stolen goods.

On that occasion Harper was given a 14 month prison sentence suspended for 18 months for burgling an elderly lady's house in Felixstowe in 2020 while she was away.

At a sentencing hearing held at Ipswich Crown Court last Friday, Judge Emma Peters adjourned the case until August 16 to allow the probation service to prepare a pre-sentence report on him.

The Judge told Harper she was not excluding the possibility that she will activate the suspended sentence.

The court heard mitigation from Peter Spary, Harper had mental health issues which were made worse when he drank alcohol but he was no longer drinking and was making every effort to comply with his probation officer.

Mr Spary added that Harper had a brain injury which he claimed had been caused during an incident with a police officer and a separate incident when he had fallen out of a hot tub.
