Felixstowe's morning service for third Sunday in Lent

By Derek Davis 7th Mar 2021

Online Morning Prayer during Lent

Welcome and notices

The Lord be with you

and also with you.

Create in me a clean heart O God: and renew a right spirit within me.

As God who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct. Spirit of God, search our hearts.

Silence is kept.

Let us confess our sins.

Almighty and merciful God,

we have sinned against you,

in thought, word and deed.

we have done evil in your sight.

We have not loved you with all our heart. We have not loved others

as our Saviour Christ loves us.

We are truly sorry.

In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are,

and direct what we shall be;

that we may delight in your will

and walk in your ways,

through Jesus Christ our Saviour.

Amen.

Preparation

Psalm 51.10

Confession

May Almighty God, who sent his Son into the world to save sinners, bring you his pardon and peace.

Amen.

Blessed is the Lord, for he has heard the voice of our prayer;

therefore shall our hearts dance for joy

and in our song will we praise our God.

THE WORD OF GOD

9 'But it will accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the task I gave it.'

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

Return to the Lord, who will have mercy, to our God, who will richly pardon.

At the end the reader says

In this is the word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

The Benedictus is said.

1 Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel,

who has come to his people and set them free.

2 He has raised up for us a mighty Saviour, born of the house of his servant David.

Isaiah 55.6-11

Gospel Canticle

Return to the Lord, who will have mercy, to our God, who will richly pardon.

1 Seek the Lord while he may be found, call upon him while he is near;

2 Let the wicked abandon their ways, and the unrighteous their thoughts;

3 Return to the Lord, who will have mercy; to our God, who will richly pardon.

4 'For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,' says the Lord.

5 'For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways

and my thoughts than your thoughts.

6 'As the rain and the snow come down from above, and return not again but water the earth,

3 Through his holy prophets God promised of old to save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all that hate us,

4 To show mercy to our ancestors, and to remember his holy covenant.

5 This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

Old Testament Canticle

Absolution

7 'Bringing forth life and giving growth, seed for sowing and bread to eat,

8 'So is my word that goes forth from my mouth; it will not return to me fruitless,

6 Free to worship him without fear, holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

7 And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High,

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

8 To give his people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of all their sins.

9 In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

10 To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever.

The Apostles' Creed

Amen.

HYMN:

Bless the Lord, my soul, and bless God's holy name. Bless the Lord, my soul, who leads me into life.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

We sit or kneel for the intercessions.

This Collect or the Collect for the day is said.

Almighty God,

by the prayer and discipline of Lent

may we enter into the mystery of Christ's sufferings, and by following in his Way

come to share in his glory;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen. 5.

A sermon is preached.

HYMN:

Bless the Lord, my soul, and bless God's holy name. Bless the Lord, my soul, who leads me into life.
Luke 1.68-79

We affirm our faith.

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

Sermon

Prayers

Gathering our prayers and praises into one, as our Saviour has taught us, so we pray

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours

now and for ever.

Amen.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, allelu, alleluia.

The Conclusion

HYMN:

  1. Seek ye first the kingdom of God,

and his righteousness,

and all these things shall be added unto you; allelu, alleluia.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, allelu, alleluia.

  1. You shall not live by bread alone, but by every word

that proceeds from the mouth of God; allelu, alleluia.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, allelu, alleluia.

God of our pilgrimage,

we have found the living water.

Refresh and sustain us as we go forth on our journey, in the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen.

The Blessing

May Christ who calls you to take up your cross,

give you strength to bear your own and one another's burdens; and the blessing of God almighty,

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

be among you and remain with you always.

Amen.
