A woman has described how her partner strangled her so tightly she could not utter a sound.

Joseph Warwick, from Felixstowe but who has been in custody since the offences in the town last January, was handed a total of 8 months in prison after he admitted an offence of strangulation and breaching a suspended 16 week prison sentence

Warwick was jailed for 14 months for the offence of strangulation with 16 weeks to be served consecutively for breaching the suspended prison sentence.

He was also banned from contacting the victim for five years.

Harwich had previously been given a suspended sentence for 18 months for five offences of battery on a previous partner.

Ipswich Crown Court heard how Joseph Warwick spat at the woman and hit her ear during a row before grabbing her windpipe so tightly that when she screamed no sound came out.

The victim, who the court heard works with Apache helicopters, described feeling as though she was fighting for her life and said she believed he would have killed her if he'd tightened his grip any more.

Sentencing him Judge Emma Peters said said he'd grabbed the victim's windpipe so hard that he'd ripped her skin and behaved in a "brutal, violent, frightening and dangerous way".

In an impact statement, the victim described Warwick's "craving for power and control over women" as dangerous.

Juliet Donovan, for Warwick, said he was shocked by what he did to the victim and wanted to get help to avoid him behaving in the same way in the future.

She said Warwick had been in custody since January and was remorseful for his behaviour.
