A motorist from Felixstowe who was banned from driving for six months after being clocked doing 110mph, has appealed against the sentence.

29-year-old Samuel Heyes, of Rendlesham Road, Felixstowe, was caught driving his Audi A4 on the westbound carriageway of the A14 near Sproughton at high speed, on April 30. A laser speed detection device recorded Heyes, who works for a cargo handling business, going at 110mph.

Neil Davies, defending, said Heyes was classed as a key-worker during the coronavirus lockdown, and had taken a telephone call from his business partner about putting procedures and policies in place, which he claimed were needed due to Covid-19.

The court heard Heyes, whose business involves the ports of Felixstowe, Liverpool and Tilbury, already had nine points on his licence when he took advantage of wide open road to get to his destination.

Heyes made an exceptional hardship application, which was rejected by Suffolk magistrates on Wednesday, who handed him six points on his licence, a £380 fine, costs of £100 and a £38 victim surcharge.

The points took Heyes to 15 points and a six-month driving ban under the totting up procedure by Heyes' solicitor Mr Davies has lodged an appeal with the crown court against the ban.
