Felixstowe's popular Parkrun is set to return after the government gave the go ahead for the weekly national event to resume at the end of October.

Although part of the national park run family, Felixstowe's well-attended event goes along the sea front, with an average of 244 participants over the 101 runs. It takes an average of 30 minutes to run the 5k course, although for many it is more about having fun completing the one lap course, starting from behind the leisure centre, then down to Martello Tower and back then back along the sea front.

The Sunday morning run for all the family was halted in March due to lockdown and due to the nature of the narrow course, lots of safety precautions will need to be put in place before it can resume.

Felixstowe Road Runner Sarah Fitch, who helped organise the first event in the town, told Nub news: "We have lots of new guidelines in place to look at before we re-start and there will no doubt be issues in Felixstowe that need addressing before we can recommence."

Nationwide, there are 729 events, free to join in, and has grown from just 13 people in the first event at Bushy Park in London, to more than two million people, involving thousands of volunteers manning events each Sunday morning.

Parkrun Chief Executive Nick Pearson said: "Everything in life comes with a risk, and we know and accept that we cannot remove all risks from the Parkrun environment. However, it is also important to balance the public health benefits of reopening our events, against the associated public health risks.

"We now believe, having spent considerable time gathering and understanding the evidence, that the benefits to reopening Parkrun far outweigh the risks."
