Cyclists in Felixstowe looking to take advantage of a government scheme to help get their bike fixed may have to go as far as Ipswich to use their vouchers.
As part of its battle to bring down obesity levels, and to encourage more people to use cycles, the Government has today introduced a £50 discount scheme towards getting your old bike repaired.
However, it appears it may not be as simple as that for those in the Felixstowe area. Nub News spoke with two of the areas most reputable cycle repairers and neither have the discount scheme in place.
Paul Jennings, with more than 30 years experience in the bike trade, has been running his own business for the past two years and has the required £2m public liability insurance in place, but a technicality has meant he has struggled to be accepted onto the scheme, and is not going to keep trying.
The owner of Paul's Bike Repairs told Nub News: "One of my customers told me about it and I had a look at doing it. But because the working on my insurance was not specific enough
"I have decided against pursuing it because frankly it is more hassle than it is worth. As with many Government things you have to jump through so many hoops, and it is not worth it."I'm ridiculously busy as it is, so we will just carry on as normal."
Paul will continue to collect and repair bikes from the Felixstowe, Trimley and Walton area and get as many cyclists back on the cycle paths and road as possible.
Meanwhile, Wilco Motor Spares, in Undercliff Road West, which also has good reputation for fixing bikes, is fully booked with customers wanting to get back out on their cycles. The Felixstowe branch has not been told by their head office yet, whether the company will be adopting the scheme in the future.
Family run Alford Bros, which used to do bike repairs at its shop in Hamilton Road, closed in February after 50 years selling cycles, motor bikes and scooter.
If you know of a cycle repair shop registered for the government scheme please get in touch [email protected] or feel free to add your business to our Local List directory for free. Simply click on the black Nub It button and upload your details.
