In support of Marie Curie Charity's plans for the National Day of Reflection on March 23, the mayor of Felixstowe is encouraging everyone to participate and mark the anniversary of the first coronavirus lockdown.

Organised by the Marie Curie charity the day, which marks the beginning of the first lockdown a year ago, is for everyone to reflect on the collective loss, offer support to those who have been bereaved and hope for a brighter future.

Cllr Mark Jepson, and his wife Julie, will be marking the moment at 12noon, then again as part of a doorstep vigil at 8pm.

"I do not believe anyone envisaged that, one year on, we would still be experiencing restrictions to the level we are," said Cllr Jepson.

"My thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones and to anyone still recovering or suffering from this dreadful illness.

"I would like to thank our dedicated NHS staff, particularly those operating in Felixstowe and the surrounding villages, for their resolute and compassionate delivery of services throughout the pandemic, despite the numerous challenges they have faced. Particularly early on with limited access to PPE.

"Our charities and local groups did what they do best; responded immediately and supported so many of those in need. Without these groups, life for many of our residents would be so much harder.

"I appreciate how difficult the last year has been for those who have been isolating or living alone. I hope these days will soon be behind us and everyone can begin to look forward with renewed optimism.

"As we start to emerge from this lockdown, and with half our nation's adults having had at least one vaccination, our businesses can start to plan for their futures. Our local traders have shown incredible resolve over the past 12 months and I hope you will join me in supporting their recovery.

"We must remember too all our key workers and those working in our stores and supermarkets. We will not forget how you kept us safe whilst shopping, despite the challenges – and challenging customers – you had to endure. Your efforts and commitment have made a very valuable contribution over the last year.

"My heartfelt thanks too to our GP surgeries, the staff and volunteers who have played a pivotal role in the vaccination process. It has been both humbling and rewarding to witness the response from the town. We are safer and, hopefully now more able to resist the disease and its variants.

"Tomorrow, the Mayoress and I will be observing the minute's silence at midday and doorstep vigil at 8pm to contemplate the last twelve months, the impact of the pandemic and remember those who are no longer with us.

"I hope you can all find time in your busy days to do the same."
