Felixstowe Nub News delves into the life of Felixstowe born surveyor Henry MacLauchlan.
Henry MacLauchlan was born on 26 April 1792 at the British Army base of Landguard Fort, Felixstowe.
His father, Andrew MacLauchlan, was a storekeeper for the Board of Ordnance, and his mother was Andrew's second wife, Martha Haywood.
After his father's passing when Henry was three years old, he moved to Chichester to live with his mother's family. In 1804, he became a cadet with the Royal Corps of Military Surveyors and Draftsmen at the Tower of London.
The corps was eventually disbanded in 1817 so, consequently, he joined the Ordnance Survey from 1823 to 1824.
Henry, aside from surveying, had a keen interest in geology, leading him to be elected a fellow of the Geological Society in 1832.
In 1835, he worked alongside Henry De la Beche to aid in his geological survey of Cornwall. MacLauchlan returned to surveying for a period of five years between 1839 to 1844 before retiring.
After retiring, Henry moved to Cornwall where he worked for the Assessionable Manors Commission in surveying hill forts and linear earthworks.
Henry never married and, when not on the move in his surveying endeavours, lived in Lambeth or Clapham in London.
He passed in Clapham on 27 January 1882.
