Felixstowe Nub News delves into the life of St. Felix of Burgundy and how his life led to his name being the inspiration behind the name "Felixstowe."

Felix of Burgundy came from, unsurprisingly, the Frankish kingdom of Burgundy. He is thought to have been ordained in Burgundy in the year 630, according to Bede.

He soon travelled to Canterbury before being summoned to East Anglia by King Sigeberht of East Anglia, the first English king to receive a Christian baptism and education.

Felix is mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in the annal for 633 in the following statement:

"Here there came from the region of Burgundy a bishop who was called Felix, who preached the faith to the people of East Anglia; called here by King Sigeberht; he received a bishopric in Dommoc in which he remained for seventeen years."

King Sigeberht's Christian efforts in East Anglia was supported by Felix.

Soon after Felix's arrival, he established a church at Dommoc, widely interpreted to mean Dunwich. Other historians have suggested that an alternative site for Felix was Walton Castle, near Felixstowe.

Bede stated that Felix started a school "where boys could be taught letters" to provide the East Anglian area with teachers to spread the Christan message.

His efforts were incredibly successful as he had converted almost the entire region.

Felix died in either 647 or 648 after being a bishop for seventeen years. He was buried at Dommoc but were later moved to Soham.

Felix's feast day is celebrated on March 8 and there are currently six churches dedicated to him in North Yorkshire and East Anglia.

Both Felixstowe and the village of Felixkirk, in North Yorkshire, are thought to have been named after the saint.
