Felixstowe care home's Get Set, Cycle, initiative

A Felixstowe care home has launched its own activities programme including a Get Set, Cycle race.

The Firs care home, located on Grange Road in Felixstowe, is purpose-built to provide the highest level of residential and residential dementia care.

They encourage residents to personalise their spacious en-suite rooms, where a number of our rooms benefit from lovely views of our private accessible gardens.

Susan Gibson, The Firs' care home manager, said: "We are currently taking part in a series of activities as part of our AnchorActive campaign where our residents have taken part in outdoor games and gardening and our staff team have recently completed a sponsored walk.

"We are also taking part in our in-house challenge called Get Set, Cycle. This challenge encourages our care home to cycle the distance of the Tour de France, providing residents with fun and engaging activities, that benefit their mental and physical wellbeing."

Get Set, Cycle was inspired by how Anchor Hanover's residents embraced physical activity during the pandemic.

During lockdown, Anchor Hanover has ramped up use of Memoride – a virtual cycling platform for older people, which was also noted as a key factor in winning Large Care Provider of the Year at the LaingBuisson Awards this year.

The technology, which uses Google Maps to project images of towns or paths onto a screen, allowed residents to stay active while taking virtual trips to places familiar from their past. With ongoing restrictions, the technology had an incredibly positive impact on keeping people engaged and connected.

You can show your support for #GetSetCycle by donating your own miles to The Firs (either by walking, running or cycling), sharing those miles on Facebook and Twitter - @TheFirsCH, along with a photo of the wonderful locations your journeys take you.

The Firs is looking for the very best scenic views from across the country – and if you and your bike are in it, well that's an added bonus! Do make sure to wear a helmet and follow cycling safety guidelines, and of course, don't forget to hashtag #GetSetCycle too!

The Firs is currently offering three weeks for the price of two* for new residents joining us for a shorter stay.

Colleagues are here to answer any questions you may have regarding our high quality residential and dementia care.
