A delivery driver has thanked his customers for the kindness shown to him, which has had a positive effect on his mental health during the coronavirus crisis.

Andrew Haskell, whose route for a national courier company, covers the Felixstowe area, has also taken up painting since lockdown, despite never having had any training since leaving school.

Andrew spent his younger years growing up in Felixstowe so knows the area well, but getting all his deliveries done can still be challenging, even when the traffic of the roads was lighter.

"In recent weeks, we've been really busy as many people are isolating at home and relying on delivery services to get items to them," said Andrew. "This includes some essentials such as medicines, PPE and food; and other essentials such as communications equipment and tech to keep people connected and keep the children happy.

"I consider myself lucky to be able to continue to work - albeit with some changes to working practices to ensure social distancing - and I'd like to say a big thank you to all my customers in Felixstowe who have made me feel that I'm doing something worthwhile.

"Many say what a great job we're doing and all are extra-friendly and tell me to stay safe while working.

"I'm just one of a whole fleet of delivery drivers who are doing our bit to keep our part of the world moving, and whilst we know who our real heroes are (NHS and care workers) it's really nice to get a bit of positive recognition, thank you."

Andrew's message comes in Mental Health Awareness Week, where the theme is kindness and he understands the need to keep the mind as Healthy as the body.

He gave up a high-powered job in London last year to send more quality time at home. Although a Felixstowe boy at heart, Andrew now lives on the Shotley peninsula where has a son and daughter, and has recently taken up a couple of new hobbies.

Andrew said: "I've found a couple of pass-times that I'm really enjoying.

"I look after a small herb garden in the grounds of the building I live in; and I've found a passion for painting."
