Disappointed Seasiders boss slams players after flat Felixstowe flop out of FA Cup

Stuart Boardley refused to use any excuses for his Seasiders' side after they flopped out of the FA Cup with a 3-1 home defeat by Great Wakering Rovers.

Felixstowe often stay out on the pitch for their post-match debrief but what Boardley had to say to his players after they squandered a lead and early dominance was not for others to overhear and he took them to the changing room for the dressing down.

Boardley was upset at the manner of the defeat and did not hold back in his post match interview with Nub News.

"Very, very disappointed is the polite version," said Boardley who admitted feeling as low as he can remember after a game in his four year as Felixstowe and Walton United manager.

"I have not had a performance like that from the lads since I have been at the club. Even when we first got here and having a tough time.

"Although we were losing games then, we always got 100 % effort but we didn't that from the lads, from one to 11."

It all looked good when Billy Holland opened for the Seasiders after just ten minutes and they pressed to double that lead. But two second half goals in three minutes from Martin Tuohy two goals in three minutes and a clincher from substitute Adam Vyse ended their FA Cup dream in the first qualifying round.

Boardley said: "We dominated the fist 20 minutes and that was probably our downfall because when we went 1-0 up they thought to tie was won.

"All credit to Great Wakering, they have come here and done a number on us. They weathered that early storm, and kept it at one down, when it could have been more.

"The lads have to learn they can't turn it on and off like a tap. Football has a nasty way of turning round and biting you if you try to play like that."

The Seasiders suffered a set back four minutes before the break when skipper Callum Bennett went off with hamstring injury, and they were so short of players, they could not name an extra three players they were allowed on the bench.

Even though he was forced to reshuffle on the pitch, Boardley refused to use that as mitigation as Felixstowe fell flat and a mixture of sloppy defending, poor passing, a drop in temp and an apparent lack of desire condemned them to defeat against their fellow Isthmian Premier opponents.

"No excuses," said Boardley. "Yes, we are short through injuries, but that was the same team that played so well at Dereham and won the game comfortably.

"It was a lack of application and I have told the lads in there. I hope they are hurting because I'm certainly hurting after a performance like that. I don't mind if you go out having a go and trying and it is just not your day but not like this."

Boardley, who took Leiston to the First Round Proper for the first time in their history and played in the FA Cup with Torquay United, could not disguise his pain.

"This is probably as close to being the worst I have felt after a game since coming here," he said. "It is a competition I want to do well with, I love the FA Cup and have a history with it so to go with with such a whimper us really disappointing, and it hurts."

Before the tie, Rovers manager Steve Butterworth had called on his side to use the game to bounce back after losing their three opening league games leaving them bottom of the table.

Boardley must now look for a similar reaction from his team as they tackle three away games in a week, starting at Ollie Murrs' Coggeshall next Saturday.

Boardley said: "We need to use that hurt to bounce back in the league. We will lick our wounds, but come back as strong as we can."
