A regular visitor to Felixstowe has spoken of his disgust at finding what he is sure was human excrement left in a seafront shelter, and the failure of East Suffolk Council to clean it up.

The man found the poo in shelter on Felixstowe promenade between the Spa Pavilion theatre and the Pier and claimed a dog could not have made the mess due to where it was positioned on a seat and floor at angle unlikely to have been reached by an animal.

He was left disappointed that no one from the council had cleaned the shelter since he reported the incident on July 13, but the mess was still there when he visited the shelter again on Tuesday, August 1.

An East Suffolk Council spokesperson said: "We apologise that this matter was not dealt with immediately.

"We set very high standards in responding quickly to cleansing requests and we will try to establish how we have fallen beneath these standards on this occasion.

"The shelter will be pressure washed and disinfected at the earliest possible juncture."

Concerns have been raised about the lack of public conveniences along the seafront and in particular portable loos near Felixstowe Leisure Centre.

Currently there are nine public toilets on the seafront, which are open between 6am and 8pm during the summer and 7am to 5.30pm during the winter.

These are at Bath Tap, Cobbold Road, Golf Road, Manor Terrace, Martello Park, Ranelagh Road, the Spa Pavilion, The Dip and The Ferry

The Spa Pavilion toilets are currently out of action due to a collapsed drain and have been replaced by temporary portable toilets open 24 hours a day.

Toilets at Beach Station and the town hall are open from 6am to 4.30pm all year round.

During the summer, toilets at Langer Park are open from 6am to 4.30pm,

Meanwhile, other toilets are going to be delivered as part of the council's Felixstowe Seashore Village project on the south seafront, due for completion this year.
