The Royal Hospital School's (RHS) Chapel Choir from Suffolk had the honour of playing a leading role at the prestigious Annual National Service for Seafarers, held at St Paul's Cathedral on Wednesday, 9 October 2024.

This service, which has been a tradition since 1905, celebrates and commemorates the work and sacrifices of seafarers, past and present. The event draws together representatives from the Royal and Merchant Navies, maritime organisations, shipping companies, veteran associations, and educational institutions, all gathering to honour those who serve at sea.

This years' service was particularly special for RHS, as the school's choir, led by Director of Music at RHS, Edward Allen, was selected as the host choir. RHS provided over 50 talented singers, alongside choir members from Pangbourne College, The Royal School, and The London Nautical School. The musical contributions added great solemnity and reverence to the occasion, with the choir performing 'Greater love hath no man' by John Ireland and 'So they gave their bodies to the commonwealth' by Peter Aston, which resonated deeply with the congregation.

The service, attended by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, saw the RHS pupils also taking part as flag bearers and readers. Being the lead school in such a historic and meaningful ceremony reflects the school's deep-rooted maritime heritage and its commitment to fostering musical excellence.

For RHS, this service was not only an opportunity to pay tribute to the maritime community but also a chance for the pupils to showcase their exceptional musical talents at one of the UK's best-known cathedrals. The high standard of music performed by the choir drew widespread praise, highlighting the school's ongoing commitment to the arts and its role in maintaining connections with Britain's rich maritime traditions.

Reflecting on the event, Edward Allen, Director of Music at RHS, said: "It was an immense privilege for our choir to lead the music for such an important service. The pupils rose to the occasion, delivering performances that were both poignant and powerful, honouring the seafarers to whom we owe so much."

The Annual National Service for Seafarers continues to be a key event in the maritime calendar, and the involvement of RHS further strengthens its ties to this sector. As a school that has a proud maritime history, being invited to lead this event is a testament to the talent, dedication, and professionalism of the Royal Hospital School's pupils and staff.
