Extra cameras, better training and a new method for the parking are among new changes in the way hauliers and crane drivers work together will take place at the Port Of Felixstowe.

The new measures come into effect after an investigation into an incident where a driver had a lucky escape when a container came down on top of his cab in April.

An investigation found the haulier was parked in the wrong place and so could not be seen by the crane driver and the cab of the lorry was subsequently crushed in the incident.

A fellow lorry driver reacted quickly enough to prevent further damage and possibly saving the life of the driver, who was taken to hospital but discharged the same day after being treated for his injuries

The Port of Felixstowe conducted its own enquiry into the accident and passed a report to the Health and Safety Executive.

A spokesman for the Port of Felixstowe said: "A full investigation has been undertaken by the port and a report submitted to the health and safety executive.

"The report found that the haulier was incorrectly parked and was not seen by the crane driver.

"To avoid a repetition, the order in which cranes handle vehicles has been changed, improved training aids are being provided for hauliers and two new cameras are being installed which significantly improve the view for the crane driver. These measures have been agreed with the HSE."

A HSE spokesman said: "We are aware of the investigation conclusions and do not propose any further actions."
