Brother's courage epitomised at Sea Symphony fundraiser exhibition

A former police officer commended for bravery for his part in tackling an area robber is exhibiting marine art depicting the courage shown by his brother as a RNLI Coxswain.

Artist and ex Essex detective Dr Bill Teatheredge is showing a selection of his own paintings in the Sea Symphony art exhibition aims to raise funds in memory former Harwich RNLI crew member .John Teatheredge.

The exhibition will will be held from today until July 23 at the Munnings Museum in Dedham between 10.30am to 4.30pm. 

John Teatheredge, was second Coxswain at the Harwich lifeboat station and he devoted his life to saving others at sea.

He joined the crew at the age of 20 and remained with the charity for 43 years, and sadly passed away on the 26th December 2020.  

"Since his passing I've worked on these paintings, some I had already started," said Bill. "They are all local scenes that people will recognise, there are 21 in total.  

"We have been very lucky as the Munnings Museum have let us use this space [for the exhibition] for free, so all the money from the sale of the art will go directly to Harwich Lifeboat station."

The exhibition is open to the public until the 23 July from 10:30am till 4:30pm (apart from the 17th & 18th) its free to visit but all donations to the charity are welcome.

The paintings on display are available to purchase with all proceeds going to help fund the volunteer crew at Harwich lifeboat station.

As a CID officer Bill spent the most part of his career working on major incidents and divisional work, including the .

Courage clearly ran through his family, with John attending scores of live saving shouts.

Bill was commended for bravery on the 90s by the then Essex Chief Constable and a Crown Court Judge after the conviction of an armed robber. Bill singled handedly tackled a knife-wielding villain in a deserted car park after a woman had been stabbed..
