The Home Office said the "extensive" search and rescue operation for a man reported to have entered the water concluded at about 14:00 BST.

A spokesperson said: "While the investigation into this incident continues, it is a reminder of the extreme dangers of crossing the Channel in small boats and the callous disregard for life shown by the criminal gangs."

UK's Border Force is "urgently responding" to an incident a few miles to the south of of the Felixstowe coast.

The Home Office said the agency has been sent to a location off Harwich, but did not reveal more information.

"Further details will be provided after the initial response and once the situation has been resolved," a spokesperson said.

A Coastguard helicopter has joined what is now being described as search and rescue operation.

A spokesman for HM Coastguard (MCA) said: "We sent the coastguard helicopter from Lydd and a coastguard fixed wing aircraft. HM Coastguard will continue to safeguard life around the seas and coastal areas of the UK, working with search and rescue resources in the area.

"If a vessel needs search and rescue assistance, HM Coastguard will continue to respond and rescue those in danger."

Border Force is the official UK agency tasked with securing the nation's borders.
