Nearly 1,000 owners have been given the green light to start using their beach huts and chalets in Felixstowe again.

The easing of lockdown restrictions by the government has meant beach hut and chalet owners can use their discretion about going to the sea front and using these facilities.

That could mean an influx of visitors returning to the resort this weekend and the rest of the month, with decent weather predicted.

East Suffolk Council has more than 900 sites for private beach huts in Felixstowe along with 77 chalets at Cliff House and Bath Tap in the town, which can be used once more.

A council statement said: "The Council licences land for private beach huts to be placed on in Felixstowe, Pakefield, Southwold and other areas and, as such, the use of these huts are at the discretion of the owner.

"In terms of the chalets and huts that are in Council ownership, licences are provided to individuals for exclusive access and these are not considered public use buildings.

"It is up to the determination of the licence holder whether they wish to use their property or access their exclusive-use Council-owned hut or chalet as a family unit, making their own decisions based on their individual situation and the current government-issued guidelines.

"From Wednesday 13 May, this includes sitting in public open spaces and unlimited outdoor exercising.

"Mental and physical health and well-being is important for all at this time; however the Council ask that people strictly adhere to social distancing guidelines if using their huts and chalets. For example, sitting outside the front of huts may not allow enough space of 2 metres for the public to walk past safely.

"If further restrictions are implemented by the Government, East Suffolk Council will reconsider the situation and release a statement accordingly."

Gulliver's Wife, cafe has opened for takeaway, including Sunday roast, while Felixstowe Ferry golf club will also open for members tomorrow. Meanwhile, while dozens of businesses are also starting to open up in the town.
