If you glanced skywards on this day 77 years ago you will have seen the remarkable sight of these bombers flying over Felixstowe, and neighbouring Shotley and Harwich.
Instead, if you and your children look towards the heavens early on Christmas Day morning you may catch a glimpse of Santa hitching a lift with the International Space Station as he delivers presents to children across the world.

Look up 80° at 06:48 and they should be visible for seven minutes, appearing: 12° above west by south west and disappears 10° above east.
Lucky children in the Hadleigh area may have already seen Santa on his sleigh flying low above the town as he went to a Christmas Workshop (full details here) where he delivered a personalised message to them.
- Meanwhile, the main picture comes courtesy of the USAAF and Rural East Suffolk In Old Photographs.
According to poster Ashley Grant: This formation of B-17 Flying Fortresses are from the 96th Bomb Group, US 8th Air Force based at Snetterton Heath and are crossing the UK coastline as part of the biggest raid the 8th would undertake during WW2.
In the middle a B-17 can be seen clearly leaving the formation. This aircraft is most likely 42-107208 flown by the Lt. Larsen crew. They aborted the mission over the coast as their exhaust stack on their Number three engine burnt through.
