A leading German supermarket chain is looking to open up a new store in Felixstowe as it continues its expansion across the country.
Aldi is looking to open new stores in the town along with other supermarkets in, Saxmundham, and Sudbury as part of its plans to open 100 new outlets across the UK within the next two years.
The supermarket chain, which will soon open one new store a week on average, already has 920 shops in the country, including ones in other Suffolk towns, including Ipswich.
Aldi claimed more than 60 per cent of households shopped at Aldi within the last year.
Richard Thornton, communications director at the firm, said: "Our focus is on expanding our store estate, making sure Aldi is accessible to as many of these new shoppers across the country as possible."
The supermarket chain wants sites which were big enough to accommodate a 20,000 sq ft store and around 100 parking spaces, preferably on a prominent main road and with good visibility and access.
The expansion plans are part of a £1.3 billion push to expand its commercial footprint in the country, proposals which will see it create more than 2,000 new British jobs.
The chain is now Britain's fifth-biggest supermarket group, and has an eight per cent market share. The retailer said last month in 2020 sales rose by 10.2 per cent to a record £13.5bn.
