'Days out by Rail': Campaign to get Felixstowe to travel by train

The unveiling of the new mural at Felixstowe station to promote train travel in the area comes as part of Greater Anglia's collaboration with the East Suffolk Lines Community Rail Partnership.

Aaron Taffera, chair of the East Suffolk Lines Community Rail Partnership, said: "The mural looks great and the Community Rail Partnership is pleased to have been able to support this project which provides a colourful welcome and encourages people to explore the town."

The new mural comes with the tagline "Days out by Rail – Your adventure awaits" and is accompanied by various photographs of Felixstowe's tourist attractions, including the Spa Pavilion, Felixstowe Museum and the sea front.

The back of the mural features a poster inviting the reader to "Explore the East Suffolk Lines" and features information on all connecting train stations between Ipswich, Felixstowe and Lowestoft with the question: "Why not take the opportunity to explore some of the fascinating towns and villages along these historic routes?"

Alongside the new mural, various floral stands have been maintained at the station as Greater Anglia's Environment and Energy annual report 2020 states that station gardens "provide a sanctuary for many kinds of flora and fauna."

Greater Anglia have also claimed in their Environment and Energy report that "trains are the most environmentally friendly form of transport after cycling and walking, with greenhouse gas emissions per kilometre by rail being far less than cars."

The "Days out by Rail" campaign's goal is to inspire and encourage members of the public to take the train, instead of driving, for an eco-friendlier outing into East Suffolk.

Jools Townsend, chief executive of Community Rail Network, said: "This campaign is all about drawing on the local knowledge and insights from the community rail movement, and sharing that with families, day-trippers and holidaymakers."

To help raise awareness of the "Days out by Rail" campaign, Visit Felixstowe have collaborated with East Suffolk Lines Community Rail Partnership and Felixstowe Travel Watch to install an exhibition in the tourist information beach hut opposite Town Hall.

The exhibition, similar to the mural at the station, features photographs of local attractions in Felixstowe and also leaflets providing information on activities in the area. It will be open everyday from 11am to 3pm.

The exhibition also features a free prize draw for an East Suffolk Lines Family Day Ranger Ticket to encourage members of the public to opt for a day trip by train.

The Office of Rail and Road's most recent report of passenger rail usage of 2020-21 displays that there were 19 million passenger journeys on Greater Anglia routes. This number is 22.4% of the previous 2019-20 year.

With domestic restrictions being lifted and the rise of the staycation due to continuing international travel restrictions, the promotion of train travel can be seen to come at a key time for those who wish to venture out.
