The popular Wicker family is among a number of projects given a financial boost to help the rest come through this difficult downturn.

Councillors at last night's Felixstowe town councillor approved a maximum £10,000 funding to be spent on the Wicker family, public toilets and an outdoor drive-in cinema.

All the finer details will be thrashed out at a a Finance and Governance committee meeting, to be held via Zoom, next Wednesday (July 15) as members discuss the three items and which project gets how much.

Although not on the agenda, it was agreed to make the funds available, rather than wait until the next full town council in September. Cllr Steve Gallant proposed the action, seconded by Cllr Andy Smith, and passed unanimously.

The popular willow structure at the seafront gardens are being to look a little tired and councillors asked for possible rejuvenation, or replacement options to be explored and commissioned.

The move came during a Felixstowe Forward report being presented to councillors by Helen Greengrass.

There was a mixed reaction to the possibility of a drive-in cinema, its location, cost and organisational logistics.

Concerns over the lack of public conveniences at Landguard were raised and it was suggested Portaloos be installed on a temporary basis to cater with increased visitors.

Created by artist Tracy Barrett-Brown under commission from Felixstowe Forward, the Wicker family reflects Felixstowe's Victorian heritage, when the town boomed as a healthy retreat.
