The boss of a Felixstowe based company has admitted carrying out dangerous and substandard work after being taken to court by Suffolk Trading Standards.

Kevin Zizka, sole director of Felixstowe-based KHF Building and Landscaping Ltd, pleaded guilty to to carrying on business of company with intent to defraud creditors, recklessly engaging in a commercial practice and allowing the company to engage in a commercial practice which contravened the requirements of professional diligence. at Suffolk Magistrates' Court on Friday.

The court heard how Zizka, who now lives in Clacton, left four of his customers more than £31,000 out of pocket in total, with his shoddy workmanship.

Trading Standards experts found the 52-year-old had carried out electrical and steel beam installation work which fell way below what would be expected of a competent and qualified tradesman.

Magistrates heard how the electrical work was found to be "potentially dangerous" with a risk of fire and electric shock and the three steel beam installation work examined had a nil value, according to the experts.

The experts concluded that the beam work could have led to structural failure and, in at least two cases, it was potentially dangerous as walls were at risk of collapse.

Zizka had also claimed to be Chekatrade and Suffolk Trading Standards and approved, and had their logos on invoices, but he was not registered with either.

The court heard how Zizka took fees for building control applications without making the applications, and charged value added tax without paying VAT or being VAT registered.

All the offending took place between July 1, 2020, and April 30, 2021, in Suffolk and Zizka admitted he couldn't disagree with anything trading standards had said at the hearing.

Mitigating for himself, Zizka told magistrates his marriage had broken down in late 2019, had lost his house and was fighting debt, and got into a complete muddle.

Zizka was granted unconditional bail while a pre-sentence report was prepared ahead of his sentence at Suffolk Magistrates' Court on April 1.
