Felixstowe boss Boardley hails sensational Seasiders as they secure FA Trophy victory despite adversity
Felixstowe manager Stuart Boardley made clear his respect and pride in his players after the Seasiders sensationally came from behind to beat Peterborough Sports in the FA Trophy.
Despite losing their number one keeper in the warm up due to sickness, injury set backs and going a goal behind to a Dan Lawlor free kick after just four minutes, the Seasiders overcame the adversity to secure victory at the Goldstar Ground and beat the Step Three team that tops the Southern League Premier Division Central, a level above Felixstowe in the football pyramid.
A cracking 25-yard, left-footed equaliser from Henry Barley, and a smart second half finish from Zac Brown, who latched onto a clearance from star in keeper Danny Crump clinched the win and put them into Monday's second half draw.
Sports were out-worked and for periods, out-played, by a gritty Felixstowe side that showed determined defending towards frustrate the Cambridgeshire side that had manager Jimmy Dean sent to the stands when his anger boiled over.
Boardley was forced to use all his substitutes, leaving Ollie Canfer to hobble on at the death despite not being able to jump or run freely, but the team's resilience was epitomised by 34-year-old Leon- Ottley Gooch whose last ditch tackling denied the Sports attackers more than once.
"There was real emotion at the end there because nothing more could have been thrown at us," said Boardley. "We lost our goalkeeper in the warm up, we had early injuries, went a goal behind and then more injuries in the second half.
"To show the grit and determination to come back and beat, what to be honest is a top side, they are top of that league for a reason but we have come out on top."
Barley's quality equaliser lifted United at good time in the game when he cut in from the right flank and unleashed his curling and dipping shot, moments after Boardley and urged his players to get the ball to him.
The winner was route one with keeper Danny Crump launching a long ball moments into the second half, the Sports' goalie came, missed it and Brown cooly flicked it past him and into the net.
"Henry has been really dangerous for us, like Bownie he is match winner and if we can get the ball to those up top we can always score.
"Brownie's goal was not something you work on but you know when he gets those opportunities he has good pace and he will score, it is a weapon we have."
Boardley said: "All credit to Danny, he has stepped in at the last minute and while he has put his hands up for their goal he has set up the winner. He was a calming influence for us and another man mountain at the back."
In what was a genuine team effort, Boardley had a special word for defensive pairing Leon Harry Knock.
"To a man they were magnificent," said Boardley. "Leon was unbelievable. He has played virtually every position on the pitch for us today,
"At 34 he is outstanding, alongside Harry Knock, who come in from Ipswich and was a warrior."
Boardley is hoping they can now take this confidence and fortitude into their league games, after an indifferent opening half off the season so far, with injuries contributing to their inconsistency.
He added: "If we show that sort of resilience in the league we will be fine."
White the Seasiders' supporters' chant of: "We are the famous red and white and we're on our way to Wembley", may be somewhat optimistic, the win has earned Felixstowe and Walton United a £3,000 win bonus, and they will be hoping for home tie when the second round draw is made on Monday.
Boardley said: "It is unlikely we will get to Wembley in the Trophy but it is great to see the fans have a good day and it helps the finances of the club."
A minutes silence was immaculate observed before the game, and both sets of players and the officials took a knee as stand against racism.
