Fishermen and their families can receive free dental care when a charity dental unit visits Ferry Boat Yard in Felixstowe this Friday and Saturday
The dental charity Dentaid is bringing its dental surgery on wheels to the boat yard with volunteers providing free check-ups, oral health advice and emergency treatments.
Dentaid is working with the Fishermen's Missions who identified that many fishermen struggle to access dental care due to their working patterns. Many live with long-term toothache and find it difficult to register with a dental practice.
Dentaid has run similar clinics at ports and fishing quays around the UK, including a recent trip to Lowestoft.
This is the charity's first visit to Felixstowe. Dentaid also runs mobile dental clinics for homeless and vulnerable people, refugees and asylum seekers and other vulnerable and hard-to-reach groups across the UK.
"We're looking forward to visiting Felixstowe and providing dental care for the fishing community," said Dentaid's UK development manager, Sue Smith. "We know that many fishermen are living with the misery of untreated toothache and struggle to find dental care.
"By bringing our mobile service to the boat yard we can make it as easy as possible for them to see a dentist and receive the care they need."
The Dentaid visit will be part of the Seafit event which includes other healthcare and advice for fishermen and their families.
The mobile dental unit will be parked at Ferry Boat Yard in Felixstowe from 10am - 4pm on Friday 1and Saturday 2 October.
No appointments are required.
