A 50-year-old man has been arrested and summoned to report to court after allegedly making a Hitler-style salute towards protestors at the Back Lives Matter march in Felixstowe on Saturday.

The man was pictured making the gesture while he stood in front of the War Memorial on Felixstowe seafront and the image was posted on social media.

Former serviceman and other people standing by the memorial, rounded on the man and verbally condemned his actions at the time, and he was stopped.

A police spokeswoman told nub News: "Suffolk Constabulary is aware of a social media post currently circulating which depicts a male present at Felixstowe promenade appearing to demonstrate an offensive racial gesture during the Black Lives Matter protest march on Saturday 20 June.

"A 50-year-old male has been identified by police and interviewed regarding the incident. He has been reported for summons for a racially aggravated public order offence and enquiries are ongoing.

"Anyone with any information about this incident or who saw anything suspicious at the time is asked to contact the Police quoting reference number 37/34312/20."

An estimated 300 people took part in The BLM Movement vigil and march were roundly praised for their peaceful protest and for the way they maintained social distancing, either within their own groups or individually, as allowed by the government guidelines.

Felixstowe town mayor Mark Jepson praised the way the Black Lives Matter event was organised and how people taking part behaved.

"I have spoken with the inspector in charge and she has said the event went very well, which is good because it allowed the organisers to convey their message without controversy.

"It was a very successful event and showed these events can get the right message across, without distractions."
