Overnight roadworks on A14

Highways England have apologised to residents kept awake by overnight roadworks and taken steps to minimise disruption.

Neighbours along the route being used as a diversion for roadworks on the A14 road between the Trimleys and the Port of Felixstowe have complained on social media after being kept away by lorries trundling by during the night and in the early morning.

A Mafia expert from a leading university has warned Felixstowe will be among those ports where crime is most likely to flourish.

Dr Anna Sergi, from the University of Essex, at Wivenoe near Colchester, has written an in depth report about crime at ports around the world and has warned easing of border controls could make the UK an even more attractive destination for illicit goods and drugs, especially post Brexit.

A grants scheme which has seen East Suffolk Council pay out over £2.5 million to small businesses is coming to a close and any qualifying company is urged to apply before next week's final deadline for applications.

The Discretionary Business Grant Scheme has been a great success and since its launch in May, the council has paid out £2,503,000 providing financial support to 227 small businesses which were ineligible for the Government's initial round of business funding.

Supply teachers on standby

Supply teacher agencies in Suffolk are making preparations for an increase in demand at the start of the new school year, education leaders have said.

Suffolk County Council said that traditionally supply teachers were not needed much at the beginning of the autumn term in September, but usually saw an uptake in work later into the autumn and winter as flu bugs and illnesses started to affect workforces.

As lovely as the hot weather has been for many, the soaring temperatures and large number of visitors to Felixstowe as seen our local coastguard and RNLI crews called out on numerous occasions already this weekend.

Those incidents were among 340 HM Coastguard dealt with 340 across the whole of the UK on Saturday (August 8) – the organisation's highest amount of call-outs in a single day for more than four years.
