On This Day: in 1857, 24 Victoria Crosses were awarded in the Second Relief of Lucknow (British India). It was the most awarded in a single day. The HMS Ganges Museum, in Suffolk, is home to a replica VC, awarded to Leading Seaman Magennis for his heroics in freeing explosives and helping to save the crew of a midget submarine in an attack on the Japanese cruiser Takao in Singapore. A VC winner is commemorated on Felixstowe war memorial with Ernest Seaman VC, MM (16 August 1893 – 29 September 1918) who once worked at a hotel in the town.

Suffolk's first site for delivering Covid-19 vaccinations is to be ready in less than two weeks time, it has been confirmed – with Gainsborough Sports Centre in Ipswich understood to be the first choice, with a site in Felixstowe to follow.

Data presented to Suffolk's council, health and police leaders on Friday morning revealed that the East of England is to take delivery of 9.8million vaccines, although the specific numbers for Suffolk and the timeframe for rollout have not yet been given.

On This Day: in 1918, the German Fleet was surrendered to Britain at its northern naval base at Scapa Flow, at the end of World War I. That led to the entire German submarine fleet surrendering to Admiral Reginald Tyrwhitt, who escorted them in the Stour estuary where nearly 150 U-boats were moored up off Felixstowe, Shotley and Harwich.

A Felixstowe man who stabbed his wife and his sister-in-law after getting drunk in the town on New Year's Eve, was today jailed for eight years.

A jury at Ipswich Crown Court took less than three hours yesterday (Thursday, November 19) to convict Michael Dawson of wounding his wife Jenny Dawson and her sister Laura Thrower with intent to cause them grievous bodily harm.

Suffolk Police is launching a new team next week dedicated to policing commercial vehicle use across the county, particularly in respect of the strategic road network and the significant volume of goods vehicles generated by the Port of Felixstowe.

The Commercial Vehicle Unit (CVU) will go live on Monday 23 November, providing specialist enforcement, knowledge and investigative capability in respect of commercial vehicle activity, alongside contributing towards improving the safety of all those using the roads in Suffolk.

On This Day: in 868, St. Edmund, Saxon king of East Anglia, was martyred by the Vikings, who tied him to a tree, shot at him with arrows, then beheaded him. He gave his name to the town Bury St. Edmunds in Suffolk. Some say St. Edmund could be buried in what is now Abbey Gardens next to St Edmundsbury Cathedral. He is the patron saint of kings and against plaque and torture. St. Edmund is honored as a martyr of the church.

Almost a third of a Felixstowe infant school has been told to stay home and isolate after a confirmed coronavirus case at the establishment.

Fairfield school in High Road West, which teaches girls and boys aged four to seven, found out about the Covid-19 case on Sunday evening and subsequently sent a whole year group home until the end of November, a total of 90 students from a total of more than 300 on the roll call.
