The so-called Beast form the East 2 has forced complete closure of schools, traffic disruption and concern over power supplies in the Felixstowe area.

Although many students were already studying from home, a number were still attending Felixstowe School as children of key workers.

But head teacher Emma Wilson Downes, who herself travels in from Hadleigh, took the decision to not open the school today due to the heavy snowfall, with more expected to fall over the next couple of days.

Mrs Downes said in a statement: "Unfortunately, we will not be able to open the school site to any students today, Monday 8th February.

"I am sure you can understand this decision, which has not been taken lightly, is to ensure the safety of all staff and students who would have needed to travel to the site.

"Many of our staff travel some considerable distance to school, and as you will know yourself, at this moment, the roads are extremely treacherous, with advice being given to reconsider even essential journeys.

"Work will be uploaded to Google Classroom for students, but this work for today will be non-live."

Many roads in and round the resort were barely passable as fresh snow fell on compacted ice causing treacherous conditions. Full travel updates here....

A second amber weather warning was issued at 06.00 and will remain in place until 14.00 as snow and wind from Storm Darcy move in from Russia, which has been dubbed the Beast from the East 2, three years after the original.
