Felixstowe fails to be named in top 50 seaside towns in Which? survey

Felixstowe prides itself as a popular resort, which everyone from day-trippers to holiday makers should visit but not everyone is that impressed, according to their feedback.

But it would appear that despite the best efforts of the town council, and tax-payer funded organisations like Visit Felixstowe and Felixstowe Forward, it seems Felixstowe is just not that attractive.

The town failed to even get in among the top 50 of favourite beach resorts, according to a survey by the highly-respected consumer magazine Which?, and ended up in 55th place.

Visitors rated resorts on a variety of categories and Felixstowe managed 70%, which was higher than Lowestoft and did offer an average bed and breakfast room for £57, which was the second least expensive listed in the top 100.

However, it only got four stars in value for money along with peace and quiet, while the beach, attractions and scenery only managed three stars out of five, in the five categories judged by independent visitors.

St Mawes in Cornwall was the overall winner with last year's winner Bamburgh in Northumberland, also getting five stars and an 84% approval rating.

Just to rub things in, two of Suffolk's other resorts, Southwold and Aldeburgh, were named among the top five for their food and drink options and Blakeney in Norfolk was sixth..

Geographically, Felixstowe was squeezed between Great Yarmouth and Clacton, which managed

a mere 48% score, with just one star for peace and quiet.

Some other parts of the east coast did not fare well in the ratings with Skegness taking the least wanted title for worst-rated seaside town in the Which? survey with a customer score of 44%. It scored one star out of five in all categories but one. The town is known for its neon lights, lively Butlin's resort and 118-metre-long pier offering everything from candy floss to classic 2p slot machines and a Ferris wheel, but clearly that no longer appeals.

Visit Felixstowe has been asked to comment.
